SUMMARY
Some folks call the Lubitel line of Twin Lens Reflex cameras “toys.”  That is partially true.  They are low cost, plastic cameras manufactured in Russia , however since they offer glass optics with a decent range of aperture and shutter controls; I tend to not categorize them as toys.   The Lubitel has been manufactured since 1949, and the Lubitel 166 Universal was the last in the line.  Production didn’t halt until 1998.  The Universal featured the standard 6x6cm square negative but also includes a metal mask that can be inserted to allow for sixteen 6x4.5cm negatives to be taken on 120 film rolls.  Due to the inconsistencies notorious from Russian based camera manufacturers, each Lubitel can give you slightly different results.  The optics, a coated three element lens, are generally good for a TLR camera you can buy new for $20-30 dollars.  Although expect some falloff at the corners, especially when using the opposite ends of the aperture range with the 6x6cm negative setting versus the masked 6x4.5cm.  Generally f/8 or f/11 will give you the best results when using any of the Lubitels.

Don't be fooled by the bright viewfinder, it is not ground glass.  In fact for focusing there is a small circle of ground glass at the center of the viewfinder, that must be used with the attached magnifier.  And even then it’s very hard to see what's in focus.  Move your eye too close and the whole image begins to vignette.  But that's part of the fun of this type of camera.  The viewfinder also has markings to indicate the 6x4.5cm framing if using the film mask. The plastic construction can yield light leaks, always make sure to close the film counter window on the back, which can be rotated to adjust for each negative size.  The Universal also sports a decent range of shutter speeds plus Bulb, and includes a remote release cable connector and has a coldshoe for a flash synch.  Don’t expect Rollie results from this TLR, it just won’t happen, but the Lubitel is an inexpensive way to enter Medium Format photography and get experience using a Twin Lens Reflex.

CLEANING AND REPAIR
This camera was acquired new in the box, so no major cleaning or repair was necessary.  Although after inspection, it doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to take apart and repair or clean when necessary.

EBAY SUGGESTIONS
All of the various Lubitel models are readily available on EBay.  Since the 166 Universal is the latest model and has the most features with arguably better manufacturing, I suggest setting your sights on the 166U.  I acquired mine new in the box for less than 25 dollars.   Be patient and place your bids accordingly.  If you don’t win the first auction, many more will follow.  There’s no reason to overpay for a camera that is this common.  Ignore any “rare” or “scarce” claims from sellers, LOMO made a ton of these cameras.  Since they are cheap, plastic cameras don’t pay more than 30 dollars for any of the models, and avoid buying anything from overseas sellers.   It’s not worth paying 20 or 30 dollars to ship a 20 dollar camera.
